Living Hope is pleased to announce the recent addition of Curt Cretal to its outpatient clinic and residential programs to provide a variety of behavioral health services, including counseling, clinical oversight, and program development. Curt is a highly experienced behavioral health professional with more than three decades of clinical leadership, specializing in the treatment of substance abuse, addictive behavior, and co-occurring disorders. He brings a deep, practical understanding of recovery-oriented care across outpatient, residential, correctional, and community-based treatment settings. Curt is also owner, therapist, and consultant at Cretal Counseling & Consulting, offering clinical services and professional consultation throughout Arizona. Since relocating to the desert Southwest in 2014, Curt has held various positions as a therapist, supervisor, program manager, and clinical director. His work spans opiate replacement counseling, prison rehabilitation and re- entry, and community-based outpatient treatment. Curt holds a master’s degree in psychology and counseling, with his thesis on treating co- occurring mental health and substance use disorders, and he completed a year-long graduate program in alcohol and drug abuse treatment. He has been a member of the National Association of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC) since 1994, and he is a current member of the Arizona Association of Addiction Professionals (AAAP). In addition to Arizona, Curt has been licensed in Wyoming, New Mexico, and Nevada. Therapy provides a way for people to realize pathways for positive change. Curt blends Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention. His clinical approach emphasizes integrated treatment, accountability, and individualized care, with a strong belief in supporting long-term recovery through structure, compassion, and evidence-based practices. Curt currently serves as Owner, Therapist, and Consultant at Cretal Counseling & Consulting, providing clinical services and professional consultation throughout Arizona. Previously, he worked as a Therapist at New Freedom in Phoenix and served as an SMI Clinical Site Supervisor, supporting individuals with serious mental illness through structured, evidence-based treatment. From 2019 to 2024, Curt was a Clinician II and Behavioral Health Professional at Mohave Mental Health, where he delivered comprehensive services to clients with complex co-occurring disorders. Earlier in his career, Curt held senior leadership roles, including Executive Director at the Arizona State Prison Complex in Kingman (GEO/MTC), where he oversaw substance abuse treatment programming in a correctional environment. He has also served as a Substance Abuse Manager in New Mexico and as an Owner/Therapist/Consultant in both Arizona and Wyoming, demonstrating long-standing commitment to ethical care, clinical supervision, and program development. Curt holds a Master of Arts in Psychology and Counseling from Goddard College, with a thesis focused on treating co-occurring disorders, and completed a Certificate Program in Alcohol and Drug Abuse Treatment through the University of Utah’s Graduate School of Social Work. He is a Licensed Independent Addiction Counselor (LIAC #15028) through the Arizona Board of Behavioral Health Examiners and has been affiliated with the National Association of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC) since 1994. Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
Dr. Akaninyene James Etukudoh, DNP, PMHNP-BC, APRN, is a highly experienced Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner with of 4 years of progressive experience in behavioral health care, including more than a decade serving individuals with serious and persistent mental illness across inpatient, outpatient, residential, and community-based settings. Dr. Etukudoh began his career as a psychiatric registered nurse at Arizona State Hospital, where he spent over 10 years caring for patients with complex psychiatric conditions. His extensive nursing background also includes work in child and adolescent psychiatric settings, skilled nursing facilities, and community mental health environments, providing him with a deep understanding of the full continuum of care both patient with mentally ill and those undergoing treatment. As a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, Dr. Etukudoh has provided services in outpatient clinics, intensive outpatient programs (IOP), residential treatment facilities, and Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) programs. His clinical work includes comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, diagnosis, medication management, and individualized treatment planning, with a strong emphasis on evidence-based, trauma-informed, and recovery-oriented care. Dr. Etukudoh earned his Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) from Brandman University in Irvine, California, and his Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from the University of Texas at Arlington. His doctoral training included extensive clinical rotations in both psychiatry and primary medical care, further strengthening his holistic approach to treating individuals with co-occurring mental health and medical conditions. He is known for his collaborative, patient-centered style, working closely with interdisciplinary teams, families, and community partners to support long-term stability and recovery. He is board certified, Clozapine REMS–enrolled, and committed to delivering high-quality psychiatric care grounded in compassion, clinically excellent, and respect for each individual’s unique journey.
